Q PRIMARY DOCUMENT ASSIGNMENT You will choose from Baigrie a document from OUTSIDE of the syllabus to read and analyze according to the procedures set out below. Make sure to go through the entire syllabus to make sure that you select documents that we are NOT going over this semester. The goal of this assignment is to broaden your horizons beyond the course in terms of scientific primary documents. For this assignment, you will write two (2) paragraphs for each Primary Document that you choose - approximately one page – going over is fine, less than that is a problem. The grading rubric is out of a “3” – you get one point for your first paragraph, one for the second, and one for overall writing style. The first paragraph is a summary of the document you read, proving to me that you read it and understand it. This is worth one point. The second paragraph addresses one or more of the following questions: • Should the document be in the textbook by Alioto? Why or why not? • How would you react to the document (or speech or whatever) if you were from that time? This is something of a role-play – if you do choose someone from that time, be sure to clearly identify yourself and have a relevant role. Do not write something like this: “If I was around back then I would have been a peasant and not understood anything.” • How do you react to the document as yourself today? Who are you and why are you responding the way you are? In what ways does the document have meaning for you personally? You may answer one, some or all of the questions above in the second paragraph. In any case, the second paragraph is worth one point. Make sure to proofread! Style, syntax, paragraph and sentence structure, spelling and other aspects of writing are worth one point.
